Frequently Asked Questions
1st Choice Shipping has found these to be the most commonly asked questions. If you have any questions about auto relocation services that are not answered here, please call our customer service department toll-free at (800) 747-1095, or email us at sales@1stchoiceshipping.com
Is my auto insurance primary or secondary?
Most carriers hold $1,000,000 combined single limit & $250,000 per incident. This insurance covers any damage done to your vehicle in transit. There is no other insurance. The auto transport carrier is the main and only coverage. (Please review terms.)
Should I pay more money for a lower insurance deductible?
Absolutely not! - Most carriers have deductibles between $200.00 and $2,000.00. Regardless of damage done to a vehicle you should never have to pay a deductible either way. If a carrier requests additional fee for deductible they are only attempting to get a higher price.
Can I get Proof of insurance for the truck transporting my vehicle?
Upon written request (via email or fax) we can fax you verification of insurance with complete details of the driver's specific coverage. 1st Choice Shipping requires all drivers to carry a $750,000 to $1,000,000 in Liability Insurance. 1st Choice Shipping is licensed and bonded.
What should I do if my vehicle arrives with damage?
The first thing you should do is make sure the driver understands that the damage is new and was not on the original bill of lading. The damage should clearly be marked and noted, then signed for by the driver. Upon completion of delivery a call should placed to the carrier. In most cases the carrier will ask for an estimate and send you payment in a couple weeks. If the carrier is not responsive and unwilling to work with you to resolve the issue make sure you contact their insurance company and make a claim. Be sure however you have all the documentation to back up your claim - false claims can result in legal action by the carrier.
SHIPPING INFORMATION
Why SHOULD I use a Broker? Can't I arrange transport directly with a trucking company?
There is no difference between the rates quoted by a Broker and those of a carrier. Most carriers travel very specific routes with limited trucks and may not be able to accommodate your pickup point, destination, or schedule. Many people aren't aware that if the carrier they choose is unable to service their requirements, that carrier may broker the transportation to a different transport company anyway.
As a Bonded Broker, 1st Choice Shipping deals with a large network of carriers who service many different routes. We deal only with reputable carriers who are properly licensed and insured. When your vehicle is on the road and you need answers, you will wish you had a Broker!
What is so important about the Bill of Lading in my vehicle inspection?
Vehicle inspections are very important to you the customer. Make sure your car is washed before inspection. The original Bill of Lading is the record of inspection of your car at pick up and is to be signed by both you and your driver after the inspection. At the delivery end your car is then inspected again with the driver and you or your agent. Both parties are then to again sign the bill of lading make sure to note any discrepancy between the first bill of lading and the second. Any claim must be file directly with the carrier and their insurance immediately.
Do you allow my vehicle to go to terminals or to switch trucks?
We try to offer door-to-door service as much as possible. This means the driver will get as close to your door as they can legally and safely can. Many cities have restrictions on large trucks that prohibit them from driving into residential areas. Transport trucks are 70-75 feet long and they need a lot of room to move around and get in, so if the access to your house is restricted by narrow streets, low-hanging trees, tight turns the driver may ask you to meet them at a large parking lot near-by. We believe that terminals are not only more costly in the long run, we have found that more claim damage reports come from terminals than anywhere else. Once your vehicle is loaded on the truck we require that it stay on that same truck until delivery.
What is the best size carrier to transport a vehicle? (3, 5, 6, 8 or 10 car carrier)
The actual truck/trailer size does not matter - sometimes you will get faster service with the smaller carrier. What is more important is the customer service behind the company.
TIME FRAMES AND SCHEDULING
How long should an auto transport take?
Shipping time depends on the transporter. Listed below are basic guidelines. Make sure however you contact your shipper for their actual scheduled times once you have been scheduled with your SPECIFIC approved driver.
1st Choice Shipping will provide you with this information when your vehicle is scheduled.
East Coast to West Coast - approx. 7 to 14 days
Midwest to East Coast - approx. 5 to 8 days
South to the North - approx. 5 to 8 days
How does a "pick-up window" work?
When a transporter says "pick-up window" they are referring to the time surrounding your pick up date. Due to traffic, weather and many other factors it is hard for them to narrow down a time frame until the day before actual shipment.
Why are pick up and delivery times not guaranteed?
Due to the state taxation and inspections on car carrier transportation and auto shipping laws from the Department of Transportation who govern the specifics of vehicle transportation, exact pick up dates and delivery dates cannot be guaranteed. If a company leads to believe they can pick up or deliver a vehicle on an exact date you could be in for disappointment. The truth is that pick up and delivery can only be scheduled in an estimated window. Due to weather, traffic, and many other obstacles it is hard to give an exact time. In our experience the window of pick up or delivery usually holds true for 90 percent of all orders placed. We will work hard to try to minimize this time period as much as is safely possible.
FEES AND GUARANTEES
How does auto transport work?
Auto transport is very simple. Place your order with 1st Choice Shipping the minute you purchase your vehicle. Please review our deposit policy. There is no cancellation fee as long as we are notified in writing (fax or e-mail) 48 hours prior to scheduled pick-up. You should receive a call from the carrier anywhere from 10 to 24 hours in advance of your pick up date. The driver will arrive, review the vehicle with you (or your seller) and then load it on the truck. The reverse happens at the delivery point - the driver calls in advance, you'll walk around the vehicle for damage and take delivery and pay your driver the balance of shipping.
Why does a truck or SUV shipment cost more than a regular sedan?
Shipments are based on weight that a truck can legally carry - this is why there is a small price difference between $50.00 and $100.00 for a regular truck or S.U.V. Vehicles taller and longer also require additional fees or with specialized or custom enhancements to the vehicle exterior may also require an additional fee.
What Protection do I have that a company is reputable?
Before you place your order with any transport company make sure to request to see a copy of their terms and conditions, and also take special care when completing the Bill of Lading during vehicle inspection on pick-up and delivery. Finally, make sure all deposits are 100% refundable with no administrative fees.

1st Choice Shipping is so confident of the way that we do business that if your vehicle does not move in a timely manner we will refund your total scheduling charge. We pride ourselves in being there for you. We believe that customer service is the most important aspect to any successful business.
